The word Thaipusam is a combination of the name of the month, Thai, (around end January) and the name of a star, Pusam. This particular star is at its highest point during the festival. The festival commemorates the occasion when Goddess Parvati gave her son, Murugan a Vel ("spear") so that he could vanquish an evil asura. Thaipusam is therefore a day the good prevails over evil.
